San Guan Chuan

By Martin D. Werner

So many martial arts are available.  How do you choose the right ones to study?  You could pick the ones that have a foundation in traditional theory.  You could look for ones with advanced fighting techniques made simple.  Or you could look for systems that have only a small amount of material for you to learn.  That way you can work on a deeper understanding of the art.  Less is more.  In this issue I want to write about one that has all this and more as advantages.

San Guan Chuan is one of these arts.  Its theory is one of the oldest.  It uses multiple attacks and defenses at the same time while making it easy to learn and use.  There is only one sequence to learn.  While perfecting self–defense, weapons-usage and spiritual development you can achieve your workout needs.

San means three.  Guan means view of the world.  Chuan means Boxing.  The San Guan theory is the mind body spirit Taoist theory.  Its theory predates the I-Ching.  The fighting uses threes to its advantage.  To perfect this art you would only need to understand three things at a time.

San Guan Chuan is the trinity of the Chinese arts.  After studying this art you should be able to see the world in its three fundamental aspects.  This Taoist theory manifests in most of the Chinese medicine and martial arts I know.  Even in the history of this art there are three main stops on its way to the USA.  This was originally a Northern Shaolin system before moving to Southern China and then to Taiwan.  From Taiwan it came to The USA.

Martin is available to teach seminars on San Guan Chuan.  For more information call (480) 782-9393 or write to WuDang Warrior.

Wudang Warrior Publication

2009 Summary: 2009 was a difficult year. One reason was our little two-page newsletter over the years had grown to a twenty-four page magazine. For a part time, unpaid volunteer staff of four it had become increasingly stressful to maintain the quality and scope of the publication. In addition, due to the economic crisis the sale of advertisements decreased. However, the most significant aspect of the economic downturn was the impact it had on our staff personally. It became necessary to restructure our own businesses in order to adapt and survive. A process of this kind has risks and requires many hours of diligent work. During this period, it became increasingly difficult to find quality time for the magazine. I must confess the thought occurred to just walk away from the task; however, we have received much encouragement from our readers. We believe the format of our magazine to be unique. All members of our staff have years of experience in Chinese martial and Asian medicinal arts and are uniquely qualified to sift and evaluate what goes into print. In summary, the most significant aspect of 2009 was that we decided to shoulder on: Wudang Warrior Magazine will continue.

2010 Projections: We are planning to produce three issues in 2010. The projected dates are May 1, September 1, and December 1. Our first issue will be a double issue as a thank you to our loyal readers. We must develop a marketing plan that will increase our income sufficiently to reimburse our staff for out-of-pocket expenses and give some compensation for time. We shall continue to increase the focus of the magazine towards the general public with a special emphasis on proven classical self help techniques that have been passed on to the present through the long history of Asian medicinal arts.

We will make contact with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism as we had planned for 2009 but as time did not allow. Participation on the magazine could be a very worthwhile student project and help us to develop some presence nationally.

We shall express our gratitude to our contributors and increase the number of distinguished authors who write for us. With renewed energy and enthusiasm we rededicate ourselves to the continuation of Wudang Warrior Magazine. There are many martial arts publications on the market; but Wudang Warrior is the only magazine that gives information to the general public about health and longevity through Chinese martial arts and Asian medicine.
